Friends of Vellore UK are supporting two dedicated eye care workers who are making a significant impact on the community health efforts in the Jawadhi Hills.
Arun and Manimaran are young men from this tribal community. They travel to the many villages engaging with locals to educate, refer and follow up individuals experiencing vision problems. When necessary, patients are referred to eye camps, the Vision Centre in Jawadhi Hills or to CMC Vellore’s eye hospital.

Arun and Manimaran also assist the optometrist in the Vision Centre once a week as well as conducting eye screening sessions in schools and children’s summer camps.
Arun has been doing this job for two years now. Prior to this he worked as a stone mason, but the work was not reliable and having osteomyelitis, which causes inflammation in his bones, made it increasingly difficult. Arun is incredibly grateful to have regular work which not only benefits his local community but also enables him to support his family, especially after the loss of his father at the age of 47 due to liver disease.
