Welcome to Friends of Vellore UK – promoting health and welfare of the poor and marginalised

We are the UK-based charity which supports Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore in India. CMC Vellore seeks to be a witness to the healing ministry of Christ, through excellence in education, service and research. CMC is considered one of India’s finest medical college hospitals and attracts patients from all over the country as well as neighbouring nations. Whilst many patients are able to afford their treatment, a significant proportion do not have the means to pay for healthcare and may not even seek treatment. Friends of Vellore seek to follow Christ’s example in showing compassion towards those who are vulnerable and marginalised. We want to help CMC to ensure that everyone can receive appropriate healthcare regardless of their ability to pay or their faith.

The people of India served by CMC and their allied mission hospitals need your help today

Covid cases in India are rising steeply now, much more so than during the first wave back in September. Hospitals are struggling to cope, not having enough beds or oxygen supplies. CMC would be very grateful for your prayers for them as they seek to care for patients and their staff. Their health systems are stretched and several staff have tested positive and are isolating.

We are raising funds to help CMC and smaller Indian mission hospitals working in partnership with CMC. The major need across India and in these smaller mission hospitals is oxygen supply. This can be provided by either oxygen generators (around £20,000) which generate a large independent supply of oxygen for the whole hospital or oxygen concentrators (up to £1,000 each), which are portable machines that produce a smaller supply of oxygen for individual patients.

Wonderfully, we have raised over £170,000 so far. We have sent £50,000 to CMC Vellore to help cover the cost of oxygen concentrators, BiPAP machines, ventilators and patient care. We are sending £20,000 to Kotagiri Medical Fellowship Hospital, a mission hospital CMC have been partnering closely with, to purchase an oxygen generator. This hospital is located high in the Nilgiri Mountains causing challenges in maintaining a regular oxygen supply. We are also sending £40,000 to Christian Fellowship Hospital in Oddanchatram for them to purchase a larger oxygen generator to supply their 300 bedded hospital. This hospital serves the poor, vulnerable and marginalised in Southern Tamil Nadu and has close links with CMC.

We have agreed three grants of £20,000 each towards oxygen generators and equipment for Covid patients at Reynolds Memorial Hospital Washim, Miraj Medical Mission Hospital and Baptist Christian Hospital Tezpur. If you would like to donate towards Covid costs, please do so here.
