Friends of Vellore (FOV) UK has supported Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore since the 1940s, becoming a registered charity in 1952.
Our Beginnings
In the early years, FOV provided essential funding, purchased medical equipment that wasn’t available in India, and arranged specialist training for staff. We also raised awareness through large fundraising concerts, including annual events at the Royal Albert Hall and in Birmingham.
Adapting with the Times
As CMC grew into a self-governing Indian institution with highly trained local staff, FOV’s role evolved. Instead of day-to-day support, we now focus on funding key projects, encouraging staff, and sharing CMC’s story with friends and supporters across the UK.
Our Role Today
FOV continues to raise funds for vital projects such as the Person-to-Person Fund, which supports patients who cannot afford treatment, and the Palliative Care programme, which serves some of the most vulnerable families. We also support initiatives like the Low Cost Effective Care Unit in Vellore’s slums, bringing quality healthcare to the poorest communities.
Why We’re Still Needed
Even as India develops, the needs of the poor far outstrip the country’s resources. CMC continues to look to FOV for encouragement, prayer, and financial support. Our mission remains the same as when we began: to stand alongside CMC in its commitment to bring Christ’s healing ministry to those who need it most.
